w123 m102 engine temperature problems.

w123 m102 engine temperature problems. I recently changed my worn out radiator cap to a new one but sometimes I still get high temperature readings. Sometimes it would reach almost 100, this usually happens when I get stuck in traffic and I do a sprint with the car.

Sometimes on a slightly cold weather the engine just runs about 90 degrees.

I'm also suspecting a blocked radiator. But my hoses look fine and they are not collapsing. No indication of oil in the radiator (whew), waterpump was replaced just last year. Engine was newly overhauled 2 years ago. I only use the car 2-3 times a week.

Is the weather just too hot or could I have a problem?

nope.. weather is not too hot.. my M102 engine runs at 80 deg most of the time in regular traffic. If I idle long enough say keeping the car running while waiting in high noon.. it can reach 90 deg.. but that is as high as it would get... have your thermostat checked, your thermoswitch checked for operation of aux fan... and for peace of mind, have the radiator cleaned/drained...

Your thermostat may be stuck open, or have a clogged radiator. What radiator cap did you replace it with? Correct type and specification? What is the condition of the fan clutch?

It seems your car has the correct 87 degree thermostat. In traffic, with high humidity, temps would creep up especially with AC use. As long as it drops when you get moving again you should be okay. But if it gets stuck at close to 100 even if you're on the highway, I would suspect a bad (open) thermostat. If the thermostat checks out fine, I would check/inspect the clutch. They're in close proximity anyway so it's just good to check both at the same time.

problem solved. 2 foot of the fan shroud was broken so the air was escaping though the side of the shroud when I run at high speeds. another problem was the temp switch at the ac's receiver dryer was broken, I had the ac guy jumper the Switch I didn't know it woyld affect the fan clutch. Btw, I just recently changed the expansion valve and receiver dryer.

temp switch on the receiver dryer broken means your aux fan does not turn on/engage when your ac is experiencing high pressure.. with the load of the ac, and the aux fan not functioning properly with AC operation, you'd definitely have some temp problems.. good job!.. punta ka na bukas sa bfast eb? :D

Could you please elaborate the above quote ...

If the temp switch is broken at the a/c receiver dryer, it would affect the clutch fan? Would there be a connection between the two? Or do you mean the aux fan?

A relative's unit has a similar problem when he sprints the car. Temp rises rather than going down, which I think is not supposed to be, right?

Rising remp while running hard can be attributed with a no-thermostat setting. I had this problem with our accord and my old gasser MB. Both had no thermostat because the mechanic back then took it out because of overheating issues. Generally practiced by some shops, this should not be the case. Troubleshoot the tempproblem but never remove the thermostat. It is there for a purpose.

On another case... my relative's unit.

Turned out to be that the coil insert of the radiator tubes were contaminated with rust, thus the clogging.

Had the radiator cleaned and thus fixed the rising temp on running hard (sprint).

Btw, used 5 liters of distilled water mixed with 1 liter coolant fluid - (W123).

Where is LAVRAMON located? Sorry didn't have the chance to see Tong's, Bong's and Van's post. How much for pull down and cleaning?

We had the radiator done in Bangkal, Makati at TIC's Radiator Shop. I know you are familiar where they are... They pulled out the coils individually and put back on its original form.

Any Goodyear Servitek has the machine...

You have to watch out though as some of their mechanics will try to show you a "broken" thermostat when it's actually still a perfectly working unit...

Hi Joey! I did some tests with the clutch fan and the wire connected to the receiver dryer. I found out they were connected. it's like a safety feature when your ac system experences high pressure it would engage the clutch fan. Right now I don't have a temp switch installed, I'll be getting one when I get back to manila.

Right now my car runs fine without ac. But temp is slightly higher with ac.

Hi just wanted to share,

I also had the same problem I was wondering about it for a couple of months till i decided to change the thermostat to 72 degrees, turns out that the thermostat was already broken. literally in two pieces. Its funny that I usually think its something worse when its only a simple fix hehe.

Now the car runs so much better, the ac is colder since it doesnt pulsate anymore (I read the FSM and was surprised to find out that when the engine temp reaches a certain mark the compressor pulsates if gets even higher then it cuts the compressor completely) since engine temp is normal, sometimes reaches 90 only when its really hot but other than that its happy at 80 degrees.
